“The family, is so to speak, the domestic church.” — Lumen Gentium, 11

Across our parishes, homes have long been places where faith quietly lives — in bedtime prayers, shared meals, forgiveness offered, and love expressed. Yet in a world increasingly disconnected from faith and community, this sacred space—the Domestic Church—is under pressure.

Mission Hope is our parish initiative to rebuild the Domestic Church, one home, one blessing, one family at a time. Through prayer, presence, and the grace of house blessings, we are reigniting the flame of faith in the heart of family life — where the Church begins.

What Is the Domestic Church?

The phrase “Domestic Church” isn’t new. It comes from the early Church and was affirmed at the Second Vatican Council in Lumen Gentium:

“In it parents should, by their word and example, be the first preachers of the faith to their children.” (LG, 11)

Simply put, the Domestic Church is the family living out the faith in daily life. It’s the smallest body of gathered believers in Christ, where love, forgiveness, prayer, and Christian witness are first learned.

Pope St. John Paul II taught:

“The future of humanity passes by way of the family.” (Familiaris Consortio, 86)

The family is the primary place where faith is handed on. It is here that vocations are nurtured, mercy is practiced, and the love of God is made visible.

Pope Francis echoes this in Amoris Laetitia:

“The Church is a family of families, constantly enriched by the lives of all those domestic churches.” (AL, 87)

When the family is healthy in faith, so too is the Church. And when it struggles, the whole Church feels the strain.

Why Rebuild? Why Now?

Today, many Catholic families face deep challenges — isolation, secularism, and broken rhythms of prayer and Mass. Homes that once echoed with grace before meals or family rosaries have fallen silent. But the call to holiness in the home has not changed.

Mission Hope is our response — not just to bless homes, but to renew Catholic family life as a beacon of faith, love, and hope in our communities.

Through the ministry of house blessings, pastoral visits, and simple acts of prayer and connection, we will:

  • Pray with families in their own space
  • Bless their homes with holy water and Scripture
  • Encourage habits of faith — prayer, sacraments, forgiveness
  • Remind them that their home is a holy place

“One Home. One Blessing. One Church.”

This is not just a pastoral program. It is a mission — a mission of hope.

We are not waiting for families to come to the Church building; we are bringing the Church to them. And in doing so, we are reminding them — and ourselves — that faith begins at home.

“When we speak of the Domestic Church, we are saying that it is in the family that parents become the first teachers of the faith to their children… a place of prayer, love, and communion.” — Pope Francis

How You Can Take Part

Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, single person, or young couple, your home is part of this mission. Here’s how to get involved:

  • Request a house blessing through the parish office or email
  • Set up a prayer space or crucifix in your home
  • Join us in praying for families every Sunday
  • Share your own family’s faith story to inspire others
  • Support the mission with your time, presence, and encouragement

Together, with grace and hope, we are rebuilding the Church from the inside out — beginning at home.
